I write because….

After an eventful and tiring Sunday at a theme park with my son, when I was back home I found the very important email in my inbox. Writing 101 has begun! And the first writing prompt was “I write because…” When I saw the prompt, I was confused. I didn’t know what I was going to write and nothing came to my mind! I decided to sleep on the idea and write my post on Monday morning as is the norm.

I read a few posts on ‘The Commons’ and they were all great. Well written articles! Although, I was tempted to write my own post, I was too tired. I crashed onto my bed and fell asleep in a minute. I slept over the prompt, quite figuratively! You see, though I was sleeping, my mind was wide awake thinking (and talking to me) of all the possible reasons why I write.

Racing_mindWhen I woke up, I appreciated the fact that my mind has come up with a gazillion reasons, which I am not going to jot down in this post. Not to worry, I will spare you the agony. Coming back to the topic, though my mind had a gazillion reasons, what I realized was that I have a hyperactive mind. It just wouldn’t stop thinking of things. It has an opinion on almost everything. And it has to keep talking to me about all of it.

As a child, I would make up stories about everything that caught my attention. From the bright-colored car on the road to the beautiful piece of art displayed in a gallery. Then I would repeat the stories to my dad. He was so amused by my stories that he asked me to write them down. WritingEver since, I started writing down everything that came to my mind. Be it an opinion on something, a story I came up with, or just the ramblings of my mind. I enjoyed writing so much that I started keeping a journal. I wrote in my journal every night for about 10 years. Some of the entries in my journal was so colorful that it inspired me to write short stories, and then poems.

When I grew up, life happened and somewhere along the way, I lost my will to write only to find it back a decade later in the form of my blog. I started my blog as a method of spreading awareness on social causes. But every time I wrote a post, I could sense the strong urge in me asking for more. In order to please that urge, I added a page on my blog dedicated to “Short Stories” and started taking part in short story challenges in the blogosphere.

As Anais Nin quoted “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect”

I hope to build up on my writing capabilities with the Writing 101 course and someday become a published author!

And that, my friends, is why I write!
